Chunky Chips with Curry SaucePin

The most famous of all the vegan restaurants in Newcastle, popular pub the Ship Inn has been serving exclusively vegan food since 2016.

Sitting in the best and most trendy part of the city (that’s the Ouseburn*), The Ship Inn serves up a bunch of pub-style classics, but all cruelty-free.

Top eats include jackfruit shawarmas, twice-cooked crispy fries, big burgers, excellent pizzas, and even a meat-free Sunday roast.

It also has board games, friendly staff, a small outdoor seating area (nice when the sun comes out), occasional DJs and live music, and a great range of craft drinks (though they’re not all vegan). And because you’re so close to all the Ouseburn nightlife here, this is a good place to start a party.

*The Ouseburn is the most hip and happening part of Newcastle. A small but surprisingly-packed area, it’s full of independent venues, craft-beer serving pubs, brunch spots, climbing centers, cozy cafes, and even a little petting zoo. For more on the area, get yourself over to our guides on:

(oh, and, the Ouseburn in general is great for vegan-friendly options—most menus here have at least a couple of decent vegan items)

2. SnackWallah

  • Price range: £
  • Opening hours: 9:30am until 4:30pm from Monday to Friday, 9:30am until 5pm on Saturdays, and closed on Sundays
  • Address: Snackwallah, Unit 31-33, Alley One, Grainger Market, Newcastle, NE1 5QG
  • Website

Sitting inside the Grainger Market (WAY more on that flavor-packed place soon!), this vegan-only Indian restaurant is one of the city’s most popular casual eateries.

… and if you head here on a Saturday, it’s always super busy.

It’s a street-food style place, and more like an indoor canteen than a ‘restaurant.’ Ideal for low prices, an appealing atmosphere, and nabbing a quick meal. If you like laid-back cafe-style vibes, you’ll love it.

Their standard curry, daal, rice and naan combo is only £7.

Other vegan options include wraps, sandwiches, chaat, pakoras, lassis, bhel puri, and more stuff you have (and haven’t!) heard of. Genuinely unique, genuinely full of flavor, and one of Newcastle’s top places to eat (whether or not you’re vegan).

3. The Grainger Market (in general)

  • Price range: ££
  • Opening hours: 9am until 5:30pm from Monday to Saturday. Closed on Sundays. Different venues have different opening hours—so if you want to visit a specific place, make sure you check!
  • Address: Grainger Street, Newcastle, NE1 5QQ

So, SnackWallah sits inside the Grainger Market.

… but so do MANY other cut-price casual places to eat.

The Grainger Market is one of Newcastle’s most iconic venues. An old-school indoor market, it opened back in 1835. Full of friendly faces and old-school independent sellers, it’s a welcoming but strange place:

Although it still has retro vibes and age-old stalls (butchers, fishmongers, fruit and veg sellers)…

… it also has lots of hip and trendy modern venues (Greek food, pizzas-by-the-slice, burgers, salads, a Spanish deli, sandwiches, fresh seafood, Chinese dumplings, tasty baos, and loads more). And the vast majority of the stalls and stores have tasty vegan options.

Get inside, have a wander, and fall in love with the place—I guarantee you will!

4. Super Natural Cafe

  • Price range: ££
  • Opening hours: 9am until 8pm from Mondays to Wednesdays, 9am until 10pm from Thursdays to Saturdays, and 10am until 8pm on Sundays
  • Address: 27 Grainger Street, Newcastle, NE1 5JE,
  • Website

A cafe, bar, and restaurant, Super Natural Cafe sits just a two-minute walk from Newcastle’s main railway station.

One of the most famous vegan restaurants in the city (and one of the most popular vegan restaurants in the city!), it has a history dating back to the 1970s.

Vegan food here includes:

  • Lasagne
  • Mexican-style stuff
  • Fruit-topped pancakes
  • A tasty and lentil-packed daal
  • A massive English-style breakfast
  • … and a super popular Sunday roast

If you’re looking for a wide variety of vegan options, it’s one of the best places in the city. The portions are massive, the decor is cute and cozy (with lots of low-hanging lights), and they have a comfy sofa area.

… and because it’s open from early until late, it’s a diverse joint. You can come for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even post-food drinks and cocktails.

5. Earthlings – also known as ‘The Healing Cafe’

  • Price range: £
  • Opening hours: 7am until 6pm Monday to Friday, and 10am until 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays
  • Address: 94 Buckingham Street, Newcastle, NE4 5QR, United Kingdom
  • Website
Hot Turmeric Milk on Table of Coffee ShopPin

One of the most colorful cafes you’ve ever seen, this plant-packed juice-fest sits just outside central Newcastle.

… but it’s absolutely worth the extra 10(ish) minutes of walking.

Vegan options here only include smoothies, cold-pressed juices, and raw cakes (so don’t expect any meals).

But the always-changing selection of cakes is excellent, and the range of drinks is even better. Popular options include:

  • Turmeric ginger latte
  • Lots of (milk-free) milk-style drinks
  • A juice with carrots, ginger, mint, orange, and turmeric root
  • Little shots, made up of ginger, garlic, onion, lemon, and more
  • And a whole lot of hemp, flax seeds, cacao, maca powder, and fruit

The cafe also hosts events—including talks, exercise workshops, breathwork sessions, drum circles, hang drum evenings, and movie screenings.

… and on top of all that, they have a zero-waste policy.

Fun Fact: Earthlings is located right beside Gurdwara Siri Guru Singh Sabha, the biggest Sikh temple in Newcastle. Incidentally, you can get vegetarian food here (for free!). It doesn’t matter who you are, or what your religion is—if the kitchen is open, they will feed you some delicious food. Good ol’ Sikhs.

6. Veganatomy

  • Price range: ££
  • Opening hours: 11am until 4pm from Wednesday to Friday, 11am until 5pm on Saturdays, and 12pm until 4pm on Sundays. Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays
  • Address: 226a Chillingham Rd, Newcastle, NE6 5LP
  • Website

For unusual vegan food, Veganatomy is one of the city’s best picks.

… and it’s quickly gaining a reputation for being one of the city’s tastiest and most interesting eateries.

It specializes in vegan sushi, bento boxes, poke bowls, Vietnamese banh mi, and other Asian-inspired vegan options. Interesting flavors include beetroot nigiri, oyster mushroom sushi, and mango, lime and coriander slaw.

… that said, the menu changes regularly. And because it’s takeaway-only (you can also order online), it’s affordable.

It sits in the popular neighborhood of Heaton, a 30-minute walk from Newcastle’s city center. So it’s a good choice for locals, but not a good choice for tourists on a quick trip.

7. Vegano

  • Price range: £££
  • Opening hours: 12pm until 9pm from Wednesday to Saturday. Closed on Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays
  • Address: 33a Blandford Square, Newcastle, NE1 4HZ
  • Website
Pasta and Fruit Tea at the Vegan RestaurantPin

The classiest entry on our list, Vegano serves up minimalistic decor, excellent coffee, great pizzas, homemade cakes, street-food-style burgers, and 3-course Italian-inspired menus.

The restaurant originally started out as a street food truck… and now has a reputation for being one of the best vegan spots in northeast England. Expect fresh flavors, big portions, and super-friendly staff.

They also offer one of the city’s most diverse and imaginative vegan menus, with a massive range of dishes and unique flavors. Unusual menu offerings include walnut and lentil pate, truffle mac and cheese, old-school style tater tots, and a doner kebab.

It gets pretty popular—so if you’re coming here on a Friday or Saturday, you should make a reservation.

8. Kafeneon

  • Price range: ££
  • Opening hours: 11am until 10pm, 7 days a week
  • Address: 8 Bigg Market, Newcastle, NE1 1UW
  • Website

Newcastle’s best and most popular Greek restaurant, cozy little Kafeneon isn’t vegan-only…

…but it has a vegan menu, with a total of 10 different vegan options. Including:

  • Vegan gyros, stuffed with eggplants, peppers, and onions
  • Vine leaves with rice and herbs
  • … and stuffed peppers

… and all the vegan stuff tastes just as good as the non-vegan stuff.

If you want vegan and vegetarian options in a restaurant that isn’t just vegan and vegetarian, this is the city’s best pick. Ideal if you’re munching in a big group of mixed eaters.

For you non-vegans, some of the menu’s best options include Greek classics (like moussaka and beef stifado), and Greek dishes you probably *haven’t* heard of (like pastitsio, karidopita, and loukoumades).

Pro Tip: If you’re coming here on a weekend, make sure you book in advance. Kafeneon sits in the Bigg Market, one of the most popular areas of the city (and most well-known for being a big drinking den).

9. Glazed

  • Price range: £
  • Opening hours: open Thursday to Sunday, from 10:30am until 2:30pm. It might close earlier if it sells out (which it often does!). And it’s closed from Monday to Wednesday
  • Address: 19 Coast Road, Newcastle, NE7 7RN
  • Website
Pastry Chef Making Fruit Tarts VeganPin

Newcastle’s first vegan bakery, Glazed is most famous for its donuts.

Some of their most popular hole-filled flavors include:

  • Lotus biscuit
  • Banana pancake
  • Mini-egg and vanilla glaze
  • Strawberry & lime curd meringue
  • Peanut butter & jelly French toast
  • … and their classic glazed original

But the Glazed team also offers a load of other sweet vegan food. Including:

  • Curd-filled croissants
  • Almond croissant cakes
  • Raspberry & vanilla mille feuille
  • Bespoke birthday cakes (both big and small)
  • Chocolate caramel hazelnut cookie dough slices

… and they even offer some croissant-style and muffin-style savory options (including their bacon and cheese croissants… with no actual bacon or cheese, obviously).

(no matter whether you want donuts or anything else, the Glazed menus change regularly. So you’ll always get fresh and exciting flavors)

If you want sweet vegan options, this is the best venue in the city. Guaranteed.

Note: There *was* a branch of Glazed in the Grainger Market. But it isn’t there anymore. So, again, because this place sits outside the city center, this is only a good option for locals. Tourists won’t want to bother coming all the way here just for some cake. Well, unless you really really really love cake.

10. Karma Kitchen

  • Price range: ££
  • Opening hours: 5pm until 10pm Tuesdays to Sundays. Closed on Mondays
  • Address: 6 Bigg Market, Newcastle, NE1 1UW
  • Website

Another Indian option, Karma Kitchen is managed by a vegan Indian family.

Although it’s not home to a restaurant, it’s a super-popular takeaway spot. Delivery is fast, it always arrives hot, and they have various deals and platters.

Top vegan food options here include:

  • Tofu saag
  • Seitan madras
  • Vegetable platters
  • Mango curry with paneer-style kofta
  • … and a whole load of great side dishes

You’ll get vegan twists on classics you’ve heard of, along with real Indian food you probably haven’t. If you like eating authentic foreign food, you’ll love this place.

… and unlike much of the UK’s takeaway Indian food, it all feels fresh, homemade, and (relatively) healthy. Even if you’re not a vegan, you’ll be impressed by this stuff.

11. The Carriage

  • Price range: ££
  • Opening hours: 3pm until 11pm from Monday until Wednesday, 12pm until 11pm on Thursdays, 12pm until 12am on Fridays and Saturdays, and 12pm until 10pm on Sundays. The kitchen is open from 4pm until 9pm on Thursdays, from 12pm until 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and from 12pm until 5pm on Sundays. The kitchen is closed from Monday to Wednesday
  • Address: Archbold Terrace, Jesmond, Newcastle, NE2 1DB

Burger with Plant Based MeatPin

One of the least-known vegan restaurants in Newcastle.

(mainly because it sits inside an old-school pub… with retro carpets, stained-glass windows, frequent quizzes, arcade games, great craft drinks, and a charming vibe).

But hidden underneath the old-school charm is a load of delicious food (and all the food is vegan!).

I recommend munching on the vegan burger here (which tastes just like a meat burger!). Other good vegan options include:

  • Falafel (with quinoa, hummus, and garlic mayo)
  • Fish and chips (actually made with tofu!)
  • Jackfruit shawarma
  • Mac and cheese
  • Pickles
  • Pizza

… and even a kids vegan menu.

The staff are friendly, the vibe is great, and it’s a really homely and welcoming place. It’s often tough to find ‘real’ pubs that serve vegan food. But here, you’ve found one.

Note: This sits in Jesmond, so it’s best for locals (rather than short-term visitors). That said, it’s easy to get here by hopping on Newcastle’s Metro. If that’s your plan, get off at the ‘Jesmond’ stop.

12. A Little Piece of Sky

  • Price range: £
  • Opening hours: 11am until 3:30pm Monday to Saturday. Closed on Sundays. On Fridays, they also open up from 5pm until 8pm to serve vegan and vegetarian servings of ‘fish and chips’
  • Address: 186 Heaton Road, Newcastle, NE6 5HP
  • Website
Chips and Mushy PeasPin

Another takeaway option, A Little Piece of Sky is managed by the same people who manage Newcastle’s popular vegetarian Sky Apple Cafe (which, at the time of writing, is temporarily closed).

Super tasty and super affordable (this is the best-value place on our list, by a pretty long way), vegan options here include:

  • Cheeseburgers
  • Chili cheeseburgers
  • Their ‘super sandwich’ (which features hummus, carrot, avocado, vegan mayo, superfood pesto, and tasty brown bread)

They also offer lots of vegetarian (but not vegan) options, including halloumi burgers, refried bean quesadillas, breakfast baps, and breakfast burritos.

Before You Go

Okay, we’re done with meat-free munching!

To sum up, my top recommendations for Newcastle vegan food are:

  • The Ship Inn: the city’s most famous vegan restaurant, in the trendiest part of the city
  • SnackWallah: excellent low-price Indian street food, inside the Grainger Market
  • … and A Little Piece of Sky: if you want to save some cash
