Costa Rica and Panama May Get a Train Linking the Two Countries ⋆ The Costa Rica News

Costa Rica and Panama took a new step toward transportation integration by signing a memorandum of understanding to cooperate on the development of their railway projects.

The agreement was signed between the Costa Rican Railway Institute (Incofer) and Panama’s National Railway Secretariat.

The goal is to establish cooperation mechanisms to analyze a potential interconnection between the railway systems being developed by both countries.

The document provides for joint work on technical and engineering studies, social and environmental impact analyses, and territorial planning.

It also includes cooperation on urban planning in border areas and on risk management associated with the development of railway infrastructure.

The memorandum will be valid for an initial period of five years, during which both institutions will exchange information and technical expertise.

The signing of the agreement comes as Costa Rica seeks to revive the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM) electric train project.

For its part, Panama is moving forward with the construction of the third metro line in its capital and is studying the feasibility of a train line extending to Paso Canoas.

The cooperation could lay the groundwork for a future rail connection that would facilitate the transport of passengers and goods between the two countries.
