Hear about travel to East Java in Indonesia as the Amateur Traveler talks to Kiara Kolaczyk from Kultura Travel about this less-traveled region where she once lived.

Kiara’s recommended East Java itinerary starts with the better-known sights, then shifts into a more Malang-centered, off-the-beaten-path route. She opens with Mount Bromo as the big classic excursion, especially as a sunrise trip, then mentions Borobudur and Prambanan as the other major temple stops, though she notes those are more of a Central Java add-on than part of her core East Java route.

After that, her main recommendation is to base yourself around Malang and explore cultural sites there instead of just doing the standard Bali-to-Bromo run.

Her Malang-focused itinerary is: arrive via the larger nearby city, then continue on to Malang, and explore what she calls the “Temple Circuit of Malang,” a loop of smaller historic temples, including Badut, Singosari, Kidal, Jago, and another water-and-nature-linked ritual site. She recommends this because most visitors never go beyond the best-known local temples, and she says the whole circuit can be done in about four to five hours, ideally with a rental car or a driver for the day.

From there, she recommends staying in Malang and visiting the colorful neighborhoods, especially the multicolored Kampung Warna-Warni Jodipan, as well as the nearby blue-and-white neighborhoods that get fewer visitors. She presents these as good cultural stops because they grew out of a student-led neighborhood revitalization project and because they are places where travelers can actually interact with locals.

Her standout nature recommendation is the Tumpak Sewu Waterfalls, she calls the “Niagara of Indonesia,” about two hours from Malang. She describes it as a steep, wet trek with stairs, plank bridges, and extra cash-only fees deeper in the park, and it is clearly the place she feels strongest about, since later in the interview she says that if she had to pick the prettiest spot in East Java, she would go back to that waterfall. She also cautions against going in the rainy season, roughly late November through March, if outdoor sightseeing is the priority.

She then adds the Wisata Agro Wonosari tea plantation near Malang as another stop, recommending it for its Dutch colonial history, guided visits, tea tastings, and the option to spend four or five hours there or even stay overnight in cabins. After that, she suggests ending with a wayang shadow puppetry performance, ideally one that also includes gamelan music, as a cultural capstone to the trip.

So, in simple itinerary form, Kiara’s recommended route is:

Day 1: Arrive and get to Malang
Day 2: Mount Bromo sunrise trip
Day 3: Temple Circuit of Malang
Day 4: Colorful neighborhoods of Malang
Day 5: Tumpak Sewu Waterfalls excursion
Day 6: Tea plantation
Day 7: Wayang performance and cultural time in/around Malang
