CCSS Begins Rollout of 1.5 Million Doses ⋆ The Costa Rica News

The 2026 influenza vaccination campaign in Costa Rica is officially underway. Starting Monday, April 27, the Social Security Fund (CCSS) will distribute 1.5 million doses across all health facilities nationwide. The initiative was launched this Thursday, April 23, in coordination with the Ministry of Health and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), marking the start of Vaccination Week in the Americas.

Who is Eligible? Target Risk Groups for Influenza vaccine Costa Rica 2026

The campaign focuses on specific populations at a higher risk of severe complications. The primary groups covered include:

Children: All children between 6 months and 8 years old.

Seniors: All adults aged 58 and older.

Pregnant Women: Regardless of the stage of pregnancy.

Chronic Conditions and Special Health Status

Individuals between the ages of 8 and 57 who live with chronic conditions are also prioritized. This includes, but is not limited to:

Diabetes, Heart Disease, and Obesity.

Asthma and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease).

Down Syndrome and Cancer.

Kidney Failure.

Essential Workers and Public Sector Coverage

The vaccination scheme extends to frontline workers and specific public service sectors, including:

Health & Emergency Services: CCSS and Ministry of Health staff, Red Cross (including volunteers), Firefighters, and Police.

Public Safety & Environment: 9-1-1 dispatchers, Immigration (Migración y Extranjería), SENASA, and SINAC.

Education & Care: Teachers (1st and 2nd cycle) from both public and private schools, caregivers in nursing homes, and staff at CEN-CINAI, Red CUDI, and INCIENSA.

Specific Roles: Waste collectors, health science students in clinical rotations, and individuals working directly with wildlife or in poultry and pig farms.
