Air India Follows IndiGo With Fuel Surcharge Revision

Air India is upping its fuel surcharge structure for the second time in as many months due to the Iran war. From April 8, the fuel surcharges will more than double for some domestic routes, and will increase fivefold for some international routes. 

“In the absence of any such mitigations on international ATF prices, the Air India group will be implementing more significant changes to fuel surcharges,” the airline said in a statement on Tuesday. 

The airline claimed that due to jet fuel prices having nearly doubled between February and March. “The fuel surcharges on international routes do not compensate for the exponential increase in jet fuel prices for international flights. Air India continues to absorb a significant portion of this increased cost.” 

The original surcharges and revised rates announced today are:

Before: INR 399 ($4.30)

Now: up to INR 899 ($9.68)
