Methodology: How the Crime Data Was Gathered

The crime statistics presented in this report were compiled by the Scottish Government from data recorded in Police Scotland’s centralized Source for Evidence Based Policing (SEBP) IT system.

To ensure accurate year-over-year comparisons, the data for each year was extracted from SEBP at consistent annual intervals – the 2024-2025 figures were extracted in June 2025, while prior years’ data was retrospectively extracted at the equivalent point in time for those respective years.

This methodology allows for a like-for-like comparison by capturing a snapshot of the recorded crimes at the same stage each year, accounting for any late amendments or updates to crime records.

While the underlying data originates from Police Scotland’s live reporting system, the statistics are subsequently processed and analyzed by the Scottish Government before being published as official recorded crime figures for the nation.

Is Scotland Really Dangerous?

While areas like Dundee and Glasgow had among the highest crime rates per capita, it’s important to keep in mind that Scotland as a whole remains a very safe place.

Even in these localities, the vast majority of people go about their daily lives without incident.
